The
Singapore Institute of
Legal Education (“the Institute”), which was
set up to develop, co-ordinate and oversee initiatives on
legal training, came into operation on 3 May
2011. This marks a new chapter in the
development of legal training in Singapore.
The Institute is a single body responsible for
preparing law graduates for practice and
ensuring that they continue to keep abreast of
the latest developments in the law as they
mature in their legal career.
Established under the
Legal Profession Act, the
Institute is managed by a
Board of
Directors comprising of representatives from
various stakeholders in the legal community. The
Board of Directors is chaired by The Honourable
Judge of Appeal Justice V K Rajah. Directors
include the Attorney-General, The Honourable
Judge of Appeal Justice Andrew Phang, the President of the Law Society of
Singapore and the Deans of the National
University of Singapore Faculty of Law and the
Singapore Management University School of Law.
The Dean of the
Institute is Professor Walter Woon, SC.
The Institute has the
core functions of
maintaining and improving the standards of legal
education in Singapore, and has been entrusted
with reviewing the implementation of
initiatives, programmes and curricula relating
to legal education in Singapore, including
diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes.
